Something Bad is Going to Happen
Something Bad is Going to Happen by Jessie Stephens
It’s always hard going being a successful journalist/podcaster etc and going into fiction novels, but Jessie Stephens has nailed it. I went into this with the understanding that there were heavy themes and trigger warnings and felt very comfortable with how Stephens navigates the characters. The story basically follows Adella and Jake, best friends and both going through their own journeys. Between failed relationships, jobs, family drama, lack of financial support, the list goes on.
Stephens controls the conversation of anxiety and depression quite well. Adella frustrated me a little bit and I can probably say, there weren’t many characters that I liked. She fell into traps of horrible relationships and I always think, why do these themes continue in these books, whilst as a society we are trying to educate around it and be more aware? I don’t know.
I would recommend this, at a time when you feeling comfortable to navigate difficult themes.
