Demon Copperhead

Well this beast took me over two months to finish and I’m okay with it. It is a long journey and at parts I thought about shutting my kindle lid and putting it to the side. BUT, I’m glad I didn’t. I really struggled throughout the first 40% and as a kindle reader the slow moving % of completion was really getting to me (IYKYK). The second half of the book won me over. I became invested in the characters, i felt the passion from Demon, the friendships that burn through you and the ones who stand by your side the entire time.

The book also covers some heavy themes; poverty, the use of Oxycontin and other painkillers (which is a very current theme as we watch Painkillers on Netflix), the foster child system, drug addiction, sexual assault, alcoholism. Kingsolver hits all the topics and she does it in a way that is enticing but depressing, some parts of the book are so beautifully written that I think I finished sections and didn’t realise how heavy the theme was.

Demon is the character you are rooting for, you want him to come out the other side and stories like this continue to reiterate the number of cases like Demon’s are active in the world. I absolutely recommend if you are wanting a long journey of self-discovery.
